There will be a vigil on Saturday 19th August, from 12.15-1.15pm outside Lynchs Castle (AIB bank, Shop Street, Galway.)
The theme of the vigil is: Stop Killing the Children of the Middle East.
We are asking all peoples on a broad anti-war front to join in this vigil with placards, posters, photos, flags and to bring along anything associated with children e.g. dolls, teddies, baby feeding bottles, shoes, blankets, potties, clothes, really any props we can scatter on the ground and put ashes over (so make sure they are old or unwanted). It may be an idea to look in charity shops for appropriate items. Please send this around your own contacts.
We will also prepare a fact sheet of atrocities that have/ are happening to the children of the Middle East.
There will be letters to Eamonn OCuiv T.D. to sign DEMANDING:Israeli/US military out of Shannon.
There will be a contact sheet for anyone wishing to get involved in the broad-front anti-war movement in Galway.
There will also be a collection of contributions for the 2 Teachers Unions in Lebanon whose members need aid to continue educating surviving children (see below)
Education International is deeply concerned about the current situation in Lebanon and the impact it is having on innocent civilians, including many children. The situation must be brought to the attention of the international community.
Both of EIâÂÂs members in Lebanon have requested EI solidarity assistance and any humanitarian aid possible.
We are responding to these pleas for help by issuing this urgent action appeal seeking financial support for the teachers who have been adversely affected by the situation. EI itself has made available immediately an initial amount of 20.000 EUR from the EI Solidarity Fund, which is being forwarded to EI affiliates in Lebanon, to provide humanitarian support to teachers. The funds will be provided on an equal basis to the Teachers Syndicate of Lebanon TSLand the Ligue des Professeurs de lâÂÂEnseignement Secondaire Public du Liban LPESPL. We are asking that the funds are allocated to those teachers affected most adversely by the current military activities.
EI is also in contact with international humanitarian aid organisations seeking their immediate assistance for Lebanon and encouraging them to make contact with our affiliates.
Contributions to the Solidarity Fund for this purpose can be transferred to:
