Dublin Public Meeting:International solidarity in the 21st Century

Public meeting: International solidarity in the 21st Century Spain 1936 - Venezuela 2006: Viva la quinta brigada Wednesday September 13th, 6.30pm at the ATGWU Hall, Middle Abbey Street, Dublin. With * Bob Doyle, Irish Veteran of International Brigades in Spanish Civil War, Author of: Brigadista: An Irishman's Fight Against Fascism * Michael McCaughan, Journalist & Author of The Battle of Venezuela * Maura Harrington, Shell to Sea campaign * Richard Boyd Barrett, People Before Profit Alliance & Chair Irish Anti War Movement Organised by People Before Profit Alliance This meeting is to discuss international solidarity, its history and organising a delegation of people from Ireland to go to support the people of Venezuela this December. On December 3rd Hugo Chavez goes for re-election. Hugo Chavez and the people of the Bolivarian revolution are trying to create a society based on solidarity, democracy, equality and peace. Hugo Chavez has been at the forefront of the global anti-war and anti-imperial struggle. At the world social forum in venezuela last year he called for a global united movement against US imperialism. However, the wealthy and powerful of Venezuela, backed by the US, that were seen in the coup and employers strike in 2003 are re-organising and threatening Chavez and the Bolivarian Revolution. Activists inside Venezuela are looking for delegations from around the world to go to Venezuela and support them in December. The US empire, backed by its European poodles could destroy humanity and the planet through it's global war and unsustainable and unequal neoliberal globalisation. Alternatives are urgently required. One such alternative is emerging in Venezuela. This year is the 70th Anniversary of the International Brigades that went to fight fascism in Spain. This December the people of Venezuela need us to be with them in this global struggle against the US empire and neoliberal globalisation. Organise a delegation from your workplace, college, community etc to join the Irish delegation to Venezuela or contribute funds towards our delegation. We will visit, support and see first hand the first shoots of a new society with participative democracy in occupied factories, community assemblies, popular health care and education. This will be an invaluable experience that we can learn from and strengthen the anti-war movement internationally and bring back the lessons and hope to our movements, unions and communities here in Ireland. * A message from Roland Denis, activist within the Bolivarian Revolution. Friends and comrades. Today in Venezuela we are trying to develop our country in a way that promotes the greatest level of justice, democracy, social justice and socialism that has been seen in generations. This involves workers control over production through the taking of factories abandoned by their owners, replacing the logic of the market and putting direct democracy into practice on a large scale. Furthermore our president of the Republic, Hugo Chavez, has become one of the principal voices against imperialism at a global level. He is giving movements of resistance scattered across the world a voice with a strong global impact, as we have seen with the way he withdrew Venezuela's ambassador from Israel in protest at the criminal acts that were being done during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. We are trying to do all this under a state that still allows the wealthy classes to conserve their traditional economic and political power and dominance. The continuity of Hugo Chavez as president of the Republic is important in ensuring the possibility that this complex process of transition continues in a progressive direction. Presidential elections will take place this December 3rd, and there is no doubt that the majority popular support that Chavez has will be reaffirmed. However, sections of the oligarchy linked with US imperialism are preparing a series of actions to delegitimise this election which they have already lost. The presence, therefore, of lots of delegations of sympathetic and supportive organisations from around the world for these days is very important as a way to strengthen and legitimise the re-election of Hugo Chavez. Companeros from Ireland, brothers and sisters of our struggle here, we await you. - Roland Denis. Project for our America & 13th April Movement. Caracas, Venezuela.
