Screenings of Save the Children documentary :Stolen Youth and Al Haq documentary :In the Spiders Web" will be followed by a talk with two Palestinians, Tashreen and Khalid who work for Al Haq and Save The Children.
Venue and Time: Larmor Theatre 7pm. NUIGalway
For over 25 years, Al-Haq has been monitoring, documenting and advocating
against violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in
the Occupied Palestinian Territories. In recent years, the situation
has been increasingly volatile and the toll unremittingly exacted on the
Palestinian people has heightened.
Al-Haq will conduct a speaking tour of Ireland to raise awareness of the specific
legal and factual issues relating to the dire situation in the OPT, particularly
focusing on the construction of the Annexation Wall and the continuing occupation of the Gaza Strip. This analysis will then be used to highlight the obligations incumbent on the international community, and the essential role they must play in shaping diplomatic efforts in relation to the OPT. As a prominent member of the European Union and a country with which Palestinians instinctively identify through a shared history of foreign occupation, Ireland can play an important role in international diplomacy on the question of Palestine.
As a human rights organisation based in the OPT, Al-Haqs greatest strength is the information which we can make available to partner organisations and interested activists. This includes not only firsthand experiences, but also extensive accounts gathered from our ongoing documentation which is the backbone of Al-Haq's work.
In the Spiders Web was produced by Al Haq in order to provide a visual
overview of collective punishment as it affects the daily lives of Palestinians in
the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The film tells many stories but focuses on 2 in
particular - those of a woman in Nablus and another in Hebron. Each of them talks of the impact that the compounded measures of intimidation and other collective penalties has on their lives. This powerful film directly confronts the audience with the connections between Israeli Violations of International Law and the social consequences suffered by many women, some of whom end up blamed for their plight. More broadly the film highlights the impact that collective punishment has had and continues to have on an entire civilian population.
Stolen Youth: In April 2004, following the success of the book Stolen
Youth: The Politics of Israel's Detention of Palestinian Children, DCI/PS and Dar
Productions produced a 20-minute documentary to shed further light on the experiences of Palestinian child prisoners. The film is entitled Stolen Youth and was directed by Saed Andoni and funded by Save the Children Sweden.
Khalid, a lawyer from Palestine, who works for Save The Children will be giving a short talk followed by a Q&A session after the film about the events in the film and the situation of child prisoners in the country at the present time.
