Loose Change and the 9/11 Conspiracy Theories
The 9/11 conspiracy film Loose Change has acquired a cult status of its own. Reputedly downloaded at least 4 million times from the Internet it points the finger not at Al Qaida, but at the White House. Is this credible?
Well, the film director of Twin Peaks and cult icon David Lynch believes so. He says Loose Change raises serious questions about the events surrounding the carnage of 9/11. Questions that suggest Bush, Cheney and the US neo-cons were actually responsible for these terrorist attacks.
On the other hand, the Guardian s George Monbiot vehemently disagrees he compares the conspiracy theory to a virus: There is a virus sweeping the world. It infects opponents of the Bush government, sucks their brains out through their eyes and turns them into gibbering idiots . This neat story draws campaigners away from real issues - global warming, the Iraq war, nuclear weapons, privatisation, inequality - while permanently wrecking their credibility. Bush did capitalise on the attacks, and he did follow a pre-existing agenda, spelt out, as Loose Change says, by the Project for the New American Century. But by drowning this truth in an ocean of nonsense, the conspiracists ensure that it can never again be taken seriously.
Well, on Wednesday 21st March at 8.30 pm people in Galway will have an opportunity to view Loose Change for free in Richardsons, Eyre Square. The screening of the film is being organised by the Galway Alliance Against War, which tends to the Monbiot view of the film. So why show it? Loose Change is out there so why not discuss it?
Besides, whether you agree or disagree with the conspiracy theories, we have one central point in common, we are against the war in Iraq and against the US armed forces using Shannon airport to wage war. GAAW will be taking part in a national anti-war demonstration on Saturday 24th March in front of the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis and we want as many people from Galway to join us that day.
