at dusk on the evening of the bush / blair belfast summit i would like to occupy a bridge. i would like to do this for an hour at dusk and to bring a lighted candle in a jam jar if the weather allows. i would like to see people of like mind standing on the bridges all over ireland. the united states is divided by the war. the united kingdom is divided by the war. the united nations are divided by the war. we have seen enough barricades . . . for an hour i would like to see ireland united - not in anger against the warmongers - but in hope, that we can form a bridge. a bridge between britain and america. a bridge between 'old europe' and eastern europe. a bridge between the new world of the americas and the cradle of civilisation in iraq. a bridge between islam and christianity. a bridge between catholic and protestant on this island. a 'bridge over troubled waters'. a bridge from a confused present to a clear future. we would also bring the country to a halt, north and south. bush and blair have already planned their photo opportunity and are polishing their soundbites. i want, i beg, the people of peace to stand with lighted candles on the bridges of ireland to flood the poor little warmongers' photo opportunity - not with angry slogans - but with multiple images of people of peace, in a land at peace, a land that has no appetite left for global sectarian war. choose your own stance. but that is where i will be. - at dusk, at peace, on a bridge in ireland. peace will come. every winding river comes in time to the eternal sea.
