Are people against America?

Anyone who has put themselves through reading the Irish Times letters pages recently will see a lot talk about people being Anti-American etc. In this one for example you can see what I'm talking about.

The arument is usually the same - people who critisize America's actions are against anti-American. For myself - I am against wholesale violence used by violent institutions of America. They are the most powerful country and therefore the most violent.

How could it be any other way? Why do people think that America and other Western countries have good intentions and other countries have bad ones. It would be a remarkable coincidence indeed that were the case.

I am interested to see if others are against war because they are pacifists or because they see what the West is doing is highly corrupt.

I am not a pacifist. By that I mean if a country is invaded they should be allowed to defend themselves. I think most US military action on the last 50 years has been to surpress poor people who want a better deal - so as to maintain the supply of cheap labour and resources.

Do others share this view or do you think that in the background America want to get rid of evil dictators for the greater good of the world but are going about it in a way you dont agree with?
