Response to Are people against America?

I think you touched on part of the problem, David, when you say, 'a lot of Americans don't really know what's happening'. There's altogether too much truth in the joke - What is the American definition of war? It's a geography lesson. Ouch. For alot of Americans, Mr. Bush's ill-conceived war on global terrorism is a monstrous geography lesson. It has been an education. It has also been the dawning of realization. Many people were confused by the September 11th attack; 'we're likeable people, we've done great things, why should anybody want to hurt us?' That general confusion points to a historic lack of attention. America had the chance to prove itself a great country - the greatest country on earth. It had an monumental and historic opportunity to show the world that it was truely powerful - fit to lead the nations of the world. It could have proven that it really was a christian country - not only by turning the other cheek, but by bringing food, medicine, education and improved transportation to an impoverished, and already worn-torn, country. America could have invested $40 billion, money initially earmarked for its war chest, in stabalizing Afghanastan. Wasn't it the Americans, in the first instance who sponsored that protracted war with the soviets? Peace. At what price? What happened in New York was a tragedy. That has been compounded a thousand fold.
