IPSC Press Release, for immediate release: 6th July 2009 Ms. Hughes concluded: “While we in the IPSC welcome the release of all the Free Gaza abductees, we condemn their kidnapping by the Israeli state in the first place. Once again, we see Israel acting with impunity and the utmost contempt for those seeking to aid the people of Gaza. As Irish people and EU citizens we must remember that Israel’s impunity is reinforced by the failure of the EU to take any meaningful action. Of particular note is the EU’s refusal to suspend Israel from the Euro-Med agreement - under which it enjoys privileged trading status with the EU – despite the many breaches of Article 2 of that agreement by Israel. We call on the Irish government to take a leading role in arguing for Israel’s suspension from the Agreement until such time as it complies with international law.”
Trόcaire voices support for Mairead CorriganTrocaire has called on the public to remember the besieged people of Gaza on the day that Nobel peace-prize winner Mairead Corrigan's Trocaire has called on the public to remember the besieged people of Gaza on the day that Nobel peace-prize winner Mairead Corrigan's detention order expires. She has been held in a cell at Israel's Giv'On prison at Ramle near Tel Aviv for the past number of days. Ms. Corrigan was detained on Tuesday (30 June) when the ship she was on, the 'Spirit of Humanity', was boarded by heavily-armed Israeli forces while it was trying to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Israelis took the ship and its passengers and crew to the Israeli port of Ashdod and those on board were handed over to immigration officials. Eithne McNulty, Trocaire’s regional manager in N. Ireland, said, ‘We wish Mairead well and hope she is soon released. This incident has highlighted the plight of the people of Gaza and the fact that humanitarian aid is almost impossible to get into the territory. The siege on Gaza has now been in place for two years and should be lifted immediately. The whole of the population of Gaza is being affected, over 1.5 million people, but it is the elderly, the sick, women and children who are suffering most.’ ‘We call for free and uninhibited access for all humanitarian assistance in accordance with international agreements and in accordance with universally recognised international human rights. We also call on both the Israelis and Palestinians to explore all peaceful ways forward to ensure a better future for the people of Gaza,’ Eithne McNulty concluded. Trócaire has worked with partners in both Gaza and Israel since 2002. The Free Gaza Movement, which Ms. Corrigan is part of, is today emphasising the message "We are not the story". Instead they ask that international pressure continues in an effort to bring human rights and justice to the people of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
