EVENTS AROUND IRELAND TO MARK IRISH DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH JULIAN
ASSANGE, TODAY SAT 23rd OCTOBER

The Irish Anti War Movement is joining Free Assange Ireland and many other groups to hold stalls and
vigils today in multiple locations throughout Ireland in solidarity with imprisoned journalist and Wikileaks
publisher Julian Assange.

This includes a rally at the GPO in Dublin at 1pm followed by a public meeting at 1.45pm with MEPs
Clare Daly and Mick Wallace and former UN Assistant Secretary General Denis Halliday at the New
Theatre, Connolly Books, East Essex Street.

The hearing of the appeal by the US Government against the decision of a British Court not to extradite
Julian Assange to the USA will be held on 27th and 28th October. The solidarity events this Saturday are
part of a global campaign to raise awareness of the plight of Julian Assange and to call for his immediate
release from prison.

The awareness campaign here in Ireland includes a letter sent to Minister Simon Coveney by various
groups, asking him to speak up for the imprisoned journalist and publisher. The letter can be read and

Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:
“This is such an important case, not just for Julian Assange himself but for the cause of investigative
journalism and press freedom. Julian is effectively a political prisoner and is being punished by the
United States and Britain simply because he exposed their war crimes and corruption. That is why we
are calling for defenders of human rights everywhere, including within the Irish Government, to speak out
and call for Julian’s release.“
